Diploma in Islamic Literacy

QLI 2-Year Diploma Program Description

We are excited to announce the resumption of our onsite classes this fall. We have reorganized the curriculum and are launching a diploma program, where we aim to train a batch of students in the core Islamic sciences over the course of 2 years. We will focus on tajweed fluency, principles of tafsir, literacy in hadith sciences, Arabic language, seerah, basic fiqh, and more.

We are registering the first batch of on-site students now. Classes will start this fall at the Why Islam building classroom in Somerset, NJ, and tentative graduation is set for summer 2024. Most classes will be on weeknights (Wed and Thurs) with some sisters classes during the day time (all of this will be subject to adjustment). For those unable to commit to the entire program, individual courses can be taken as available. Class schedule will be announced each semester. Each individual class meets for approximately 1.5 hrs each week to total 15 sessions.

What is the vision of this program? Our vision is to produce holistic Islamic literacy and understanding in core Islamic sciences that is grounded in the Quran. We hope to cultivate ummah-centric individuals that feel responsible for translating their knowledge into the upliftment of their societies.

What is the level of the program and what are the requirements? Since this is an intensive program, there is some basic level of knowledge required to benefit. For instance, tajweed fluency cannot be achieved without the ability to read the Arabic script, which will be required for our tajweed class. Those who have taken previous classes with us or with other institutes will benefit most from this program. Generally, our classes are considered intermediate to advanced. Second, there is a degree of time commitment that will be required for the multiple courses to be covered over 2-3 years. If you are ready to put in a few hours of time each week, then this program may be for you.

What about online students? Our institute always has and will prioritize onsite learning, but unique circumstances have forced us to adopt a hybrid model. We will try our best to offer online and/or recorded options for each of our courses. Online transmission inevitably has its glitches so please be patient with us.

What will the student attain through this program? Those who attend all core courses totalling 40 credits and pass the examinations will be awarded the Diploma in Islamic Literacy from the Quran Literacy Institute. In addition, each course completion will come with its own certificates and/or Ijazahs. Throughout the program there will be numerous opportunities for interested students to be awarded more traditional Ijazah certificates in specific texts, Quran, hadith, etc. Some of these are through memorizing small texts, such as the forty Hadith of Imam Nawawi. Finally, Diploma students can go beyond to receive the Associate Degree in Islamic Studies, by completing 60 credits (20 additional to the Diploma program).

Space will be limited and if you are interested and have the ability to commit, please register now.
