Principles of Qurʾān Exegesis by Shāh Walīullah Seminar

Shāh Walīullah of Delhi (1114 AH/1703 CE—1176 AH/1762 CE) was Islamic India’s greatest scholar and perhaps the most influential thinker and revivalist in the whole of the Muslim world after Ibn Taymiyyah. His groundbreaking work in various disciplines continues to bear its imprints on a broad array of Muslim scholars and Islamic movements the world over.

Among his body of works is al-Fawz al-Kabīr fī Uṣūl al-Tafsīr (literally “The Great Victory on Qurʾānic Hermeneutics”), a brief but remarkable treatise that lays down his own vision of Qurʾānic exegesis. In this work and others, you will see the bearings of a brilliant, integrationist mind that strives to see the bigger picture and relate all parts to a greater whole, in the end producing a more holistic and integrated vision of religion that eludes many.

This seminar consists of a critical reading and discussion of this text in its entirety.
